Thank you for this source! I was aware that they disagreed over how Jefferson was chosen, but I did not have Jefferson's written word on the issue. I agree with you; it could be that Adams ego is to blame for this false memory. Perhaps he created a scenario in his mind where his suggestion to the committee turned into him single-handedly picking Jefferson. It is possible Adams really did say those words, but that the committee also unanimously chose Jefferson.

I also think it is difficult for us to determine the 'truth' on this issue because of their dicier relationship in later life. Jefferson was very prideful, and so he likely stood by his memory.

But like you stated, they are human. And at the end of the day, we have the Declaration!
